Interracial Relationships Gain A High Profile With The Royal Wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle

Meghan Markle officially joined the Royal Family of the House of Windsor on May 19, 2018 marrying Prince Harry, who is sixth in line to the throne. What is especially propitious about this royal union is Meghan, now known as the Duchess of Sussex, is bi-racial, the first such mixed-race British royal.

If anyone harbored the thought Queen Elizabeth I would disapprove of the marriage of her grandson to the daughter of a Black mother and White father, they’ve been surprised to learn the Royals have graciously accepted interracial relationships as quite normal in today’s world.

Meghan has won the hearts of the Royals and they’ve been “thrilled” with Prince Harry’s choice of a royal partner. The story goes when Meghan first met the Queen her beloved Corgi’s went and laid at Meghan’s feet, a sure sign Meghan’s destiny was sealed.

The House of Windsor has undergone an evolution of social consciousness about both divorce (previously strictly prohibited) and bi-racial identity. Meghan is both divorced and the daughter of an African-American mother and German-English-Irish father.

Although divorce was forbidden among the Royals, in the past quarter of a century several divorces have occurred in the Royal Family. The Princess Royal Anne divorced in 1992 and married for a second time; Prince Charles and Lady Diana famously divorced in 1996; followed by the dissolution of Prince Andrew and Duchess of York, Sarah Ferguson’s marriage, also in 1996.

According to Andrew Morton, British author of the recently published bio of Meghan Markel, Meghan: A Hollywood Princess, divorce is no longer frowned upon by the House of Windsor. And he adds Prince Harry’s then-upcoming marriage to bi-racial Meghan has not registered a blip on the royal radar.

The former Meghan Markle in fact has received a warm embrace from Royal Family members beginning with Prince Charles. He says of her, “She is so intelligent and so nice . . .” Camilla Parker Bowles, Duchess of Cornwall and Charles’ second wife, also feels well disposed towards Meghan. She and Camilla have made fast friends and were seen holding hands during a recent Buckingham Palace garden party.

It is interesting to note Meghan has ties to royalty on her father’s side of the family. Two distant royal bloodlines include King Robert I of Scotland and King Edward III of England. Meghan’s mother, Doria Ragland, is the descendent of African-American slaves. She currently lives in View Park-Windsor Hills, California, a wealthy African-American enclave.

Meghan to her credit has helped heal a fractured relationship between Prince Harry and his father Prince Charles. It seems their relationship has been strained, old wounds dating back to feelings of abandonment during Prince Harry’s childhood. When Meghan met Prince Charles, she found him “. . . welcoming, warm, hard-working, kind, and stable” She then urged Prince Harry to open himself to getting to know his father better and developing a warmer relationship. Prince Harry took that advice and all is well between the two of them again.

Meghan Markle has made history with her marriage to Prince Harry, establishing for all to see on the world stage interracial relationships can be as healthy, normal, and viable as any between two people of like races.
